I want you to stop feeling like you have to do big things for God in order to have a big impact. You see, the really cool thing about being a Christian is that the Holy Spirit living within you multiplies whatever you do and brings His power to it. What He needs from you is simply availability.
When I moved with my Mom and family to Oklahoma during my teenage years, we weren’t really going to church a lot. We were all believers, but our spiritual life was kind of stagnant. Thankfully, there was an older couple named the Meechums who lived in the house behind ours. They were super-nice Christian people, and they were full of the Holy Spirit. My sister started spending time at their home when she was 17, and by simply being in their presence, she caught a fire in her soul that was amazing. Naturally curious, we all befriended them and before long, each of us was sharing in their passion and enjoying a newfound connection with Jesus. All of this happened simply because they welcomed us into their home, offered us milk and cookies, and prayed with us. Though at the time it didn’t seem terribly significant (especially to them), their legacy is felt throughout our family and even in this ministry. I am who I am because they simply made themselves available.
Friend, availability is the key to impact in the Kingdom of God! It’s great to have plans, dreams, goals, and ideas, but don’t get so caught up in your head that you miss opportunities to minister to those in the fifteen feet of space around you. Take time for the simple things, and never underestimate the Holy Spirit’s ability to work through an encouraging word, a hug, a batch of cookies, or a simple prayer. When your heart is ready and willing, Jesus is more than able to bring people into your midst who need what you have. Don’t forget: little things done in service to others can change the world in a big way!
