Unbridled Restlessness

“Therefore, since the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be found to have fallen short of it.”

– Hebrews 4:1

Yesterday we talked about how pragmatism gets in the way of life in the Spirit. Today, I want to talk about the third and final thing that can hinder the movement of God in your life — unbridled restlessness. This means you never stop. You’re always going, going, going and doing, doing, doing. More work, more driving, more traffic, more errands, more TV, more internet, more emails. The good news is, you don’t have to live this way. In order to keep in step with the Spirit, you need to breathe. Interestingly, in the Bible, the Hebrew word for the Holy Spirit is Ruach Elohim, and Ruach means breath. In Greek, the word Pneuma carries the same idea…breath and spirit.

In life, you and I exhale all the time. You exhale when you’re doing, doing, doing, but you seldomly inhale. Living life in the Spirit is about inhaling and exhaling. It means you have moments where you stop, cease activity, and just reflect and listen for what the Spirit is doing. You seek and discern where God is leading and you jump on board, full of joy, full of oil, full of the Spirit and ready to move!

Prayer

God, teach me to slow down and inhale your Spirit’s Living Water so I can hear your voice and discern your leading in my life.

Reflection

What can I do today to intentionally slow down my pace and hear the Spirit’s voice?
