Yesterday, we talked about how pursuing Jesus in solitude is the only way to truly overcome loneliness. As strange as it sounds, by “leaning into the knife” and seeking the Lord in isolation, we can ultimately find the peace and contentment that leads us to meaningful and fulfilling relationships with others. That said, for the next couple of days, I want to share with you a process for making the practice of finding solitude a reality in your life. I also want to warn you about a few of the obstacles you may face.
The next time you’re feeling particularly desperate and you’ve come to the end of your rope, purpose in your heart to not run to the thing you would typically use to distract yourself. Nearly all of us have a place or activity we escape to, but I urge you to resist doing that, and instead, seek out a beautiful spot that makes you feel alive. Once you find it, be determined to pursue God in that space; in fact, you might be so bold as to tell Him that you are not going to leave there until He touches and heals you! Strange as it seems, I believe the Lord is honored by such requests and that He delights in responding to them. Just like the widow who kept kept begging the judge for mercy, diligently seek His presence and I assure you, He will show up!
Friend, your worst day can become your best day when you purposefully and passionately pursue Jesus. Find a peaceful place, leave your phone in you car, and seek Him in solitude. Let the Word fill your heart, but carry nothing in your hand, and allow the fullness of God’s presence to envelop you. Though it feels awkward, it is the first step on the road to genuine help and healing!
