Slinging Stones of Faith

“Reaching into his bag and taking out a stone, he slung it and struck the Philistine on the forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell facedown on the ground.”

– 1 Samuel 17:49

We know that David killed Goliath with a slingshot, and though many of us were taught that it was a miracle that he was able to knock him down with just one stone, historically-speaking, slinging was a very effective way to hunt. While it was eventually replaced by archery because a bow and arrow have a longer range, a tiny rock slung within 20 feet of a target was just as powerful as a .44 pistol. Such a weapon was simple and inexpensive to fashion, and although there was considerable skill involved in mastering it, David was well-practiced since he was accustomed to fighting off the predatory animals that sought to attack his sheep. Scripture tells us that he had already killed a lion and a bear, so he understood the accuracy and power of what was at his disposal, and he was confident in his ability to take down any adversary. It didn’t matter how big the giant was or how loud his insults, the young shepherd had intense focus, unshakable faith, and unwavering confidence in his capacity to sling with strength and accuracy.

My friend, as a citizen of God’s Kingdom, His Word is your weapon! Whenever your mind, spirit, or body are attacked by rogue thoughts or assailing circumstances, you can launch a stone of faith and hit it between the eyes. Every one of your Savior’s promises is “yes and amen,” and the compendium of His truth is already at your disposal. Just as David employed his sling with skill and precision, you can put your trust into practice by memorizing and meditating on Scripture and speaking it out loud any time you come under fire. Claim Christ’s words as your own, say them to your soul, and proclaim them audibly whenever the devil seeks to dampen the light of hope that lives within you!

Prayer

Jesus, thank you for your promises. Teach me to commit them to memory and to speak them over all the circumstances of my life.

Reflection

Where or over what circumstances do you need to sling stones of faith today?
