The Umpire of Your Heart

“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.”

– Colossians 3:15

One of the cool things about walking with Jesus is that He offers us a barometer by which to gauge how we’re doing, and that’s peace. The Bible says that this powerful fruit of the Spirit should have the rule in our lives; in other words, it should be our guide. Fascinatingly, the word translated “rule” in the Greek language actually means to act as an umpire. In other words, when we’re on the field of existence considering our next play and two choices present themselves, we should go with the one that finds our hearts and souls at rest. As we consider the various roads we might travel, it’s wise to follow the path that leads us toward tranquility and not away from it. When it comes to moral choices, this is easy, because the Holy Spirit convicts and corrects us when we’re tempted to act against the Word of God. We simply can’t find peace in a place of sin. However, where it concerns decisions that aren’t as clear — such as whether or not to take a new job or which college to attend — identifying the path of greatest serenity can be a challenge. Thankfully, Colossians 3:15 offers us a key to dialing in God’s direction, and that’s gratitude. When we live every day from a place of genuine thankfulness, we inherit the Lord’s vision and can more clearly discern His will and follow His way of peace.

My friend, as you prepare to welcome a new year, you will be challenged to make many decisions. While some of them will be of little consequence to your future, others will be of great importance. Knowing this, I urge you to be umpired by the peace of Christ, and allow His Spirit to lead in your life. You are His precious child, and He delights in guiding you to His good, pleasing, and perfect plan so your soul can be at rest. Seek His Kingdom first, cultivate a heart of gratitude, and watch as He does more than you can ask for or imagine through you in 2021!

Prayer

Jesus, I want your peace to be the umpire of my heart. Teach me to follow your way so my spirit can remain at rest.

Reflection

What decisions are you facing today? Invite the Lord to be your umpire as you make them.
