Well, we made it to the last day of 2020. I’m almost certain that there has never been a greater sigh of relief among so many as the end of a year approaches. Last January, as we made our resolutions and reflected on the days behind us, none of us had any idea what was waiting just months down the road. We’ve all been challenged, stretched, and tested in the past 365 days, and some of us have endured loss that is throbbing and stinging even now. Nevertheless, I am confident that as hard and unconventional as things have been this year, there has been a gift in the experience. One of the most amazing things about God is that He always births life from death. Theologically, it’s known as the Paschal Mystery, and it means that because Jesus suffered and died to bring about abundant life, He can and will do the same with our losses. Every time something in our midst perishes — whether a dream, a goal, a job, a business, a relationship, or even our health — we stand to gain something greater. This doesn’t take away from the pain and grief we endure as we let it go, but it means that we can confidently expect the Lord to bring fresh life from the ashes. This is our hope as we welcome 2021, and it’s the truth that inspires us to believe that better days always lie ahead.
My friend, you can celebrate this final day of 2020 with the assurance that God is good and that He only does good! With a quieter holiday in store, I encourage you to take time to reflect on the blessings that have already been born in your life amidst the challenges of this year. Write down the little accomplishments and daily simplicities that brought delight, and thank Him for providing each one. Then, turn your heart in expectation to the great and marvelous things He still has in store for your future. Your Savior is not limited by time, situation, or circumstance, and He wants to bring His Kingdom to earth through you. His love beckons you to renew your faith in His good plan and to embrace 2021 with hope, peace, and great joy!
