Surely, Goodness and Mercy Shall Follow Me!
Written By Sheila Schuller Coleman
“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” Psalm 23:6
I was so blessed to grow up in the Schuller family! Every night, we sat around the table and had dinner together, with rare exception. At the end of every meal, Dad would always give us a little devotional and we would pray. One night, he started a completely new tradition. He and mom had been at a conference where they learned a new song, and they decided to teach it to us.
Dad said, “From now on, when we finish our meals, we will conclude mealtime with this song.” And so they taught us to sing, “Surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life! And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever, and I will feast at the table spread for me. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days, all the days of my life.”
Even though we sang that song after every meal for years (we still do break into this song from time to time), it took some time for me to realize that the song came from Psalm 23, the very last verse.
What a tremendous promise - that goodness and mercy, God’s love, God’s goodness will follow you like a little puppy. Goodness and mercy shall follow you every day of your life even if it looks like it’s not good, even if it looks like a tragedy or a crisis. In the end, God will have the last word and it will be good.
Goodness and mercy shall follow you…YOU…all the days of your life because, as God’s child, and because Jesus is your Lord and Savior, you will live in heaven for eternity and dwell forever with the Good Shepherd.
So, take that promise with you today, and don’t ever let it go. Let it comfort you, let it guide you, and let it lift you up. God bless you!
