The Oil of the Spirit

“But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut. Later the others also came. ‘Lord, Lord,’ they said, ‘open the door for us!’ But he replied, ‘Truly I tell you, I don’t know you. “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.” – Matthew 25:10-13 In the Bible, oil is always a symbol of the Holy Spirit – the Spirit of God within us. And that’s why I believe that when Jesus is telling this parable, He’s in large part talking to the Pharisees. Probably men who started out with lives full of joy, full of the Holy Spirit, but who, as they got older, ran out of flame, ran out of fire, and just simply became men of rules, statutes and rights.
