The Word Became Flesh
“The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.” – John 1:14 In the first century Church, there was a group of believers called Gnostics, who were convinced that everything about the body was bad and everything about the spirit was good. While they affirmed that Jesus was from God, they believed He was only a spirit-being and therefore did not have flesh and blood. Therefore, when the Apostle John began his Gospel with the phrase, “The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us,” he was directly attacking this sect of contemporary Christianity by asserting that Jesus was not only fully God but also fully man.
