God’s Soldier

“Join with me in suffering, like a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No one serving as a soldier gets entangled in civilian affairs, but rather tries to please his commanding officer.” – 2 Timothy 2:3,4 Yesterday, we talked about Paul’s relationship with his son in the faith, Timothy, and we learned that the book of 2 Timothy was the last letter the apostle wrote to his young mentee before his death. Since its sole purpose was to encourage him not to give up in his difficult ministry to the church at Ephesus, Paul urged Timothy to join him in suffering “like a good soldier of Jesus Christ.” As we unpack this analogy, it’s important to know that in the Roman Empire, soldiers were called legionaries, and their job was extremely dangerous because they were constantly fighting barbarians and other rogue attackers.
