The Divine Gift in Difficulty

“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” – James 1:2-4 In the horrible Black Death pandemic of the 14th century, nearly half the world’s population died, and anywhere from 75 to 200 million people lost their lives. Understandably, many who lived through it were convinced that the end of the world was upon them and that Jesus would be returning soon. Interestingly, while that didn’t happen, many historians agree that this tragedy birthed some of the greatest movements in human civilization. In fact, things like the Reformation and the Enlightenment, which gave us numerous world-changing innovations, emerged after the plague.
