Contrary to the World
“And they came to Capernaum. And when he was in the house he asked them, “What were you discussing on the way?” But they kept silent, for on the way they had argued with one another about who was the greatest.” – Mark 9:33,34 Imagine the disciples, students of Jesus, arguing about greatness. To address their debate, Jesus brings a child into their midst and says, “Here’s the way to become great: invite this child.” Why does welcoming a child bring true greatness? It’s completely contrary to the world’s thinking. But in God’s wisdom, it’s because children cannot pay you back. As Christians, we believe the universe is just and rightly ordered by God. When you care for someone who cannot repay you, God Himself becomes your rewarder. His blessing far surpasses anything that this world or any wealthy person could provide.
