You are the God who performs miracles; you display your power among the peoples.” -Psalm 77:14

Here in America and in many parts of the western world, we have gotten to this place where we basically de-wonder. We de-magic. We de-mystify the world in which we live — I’m making up words but you know what I mean. We take all of the magic out of this world so we can make a scientific observation. Then we’ll write about it in a book and we turn something amazing into something normative in our thoughts and vocabulary. Let me tell you exactly how this would happen if Jesus were raised from the dead today. Let’s say a president were in a foreign land and he was killed, or something happened to him and he died. Then, his body is brought back to the US and he’s buried with the whole ceremony. But then, three days later, the coffin is open and the president has been resurrected from the dead. Imagine if that happened today. People would be amazed – it’d be on the cover of every newspaper. Everybody would be talking about it – for two weeks. That’s how we are. And I’m sad to say that’s how we’ve become. That if that were a true miracle from God, people would say he didn’t really die, it’s a conspiracy, and when they were finally able to prove that he was dead raised to life they would basically create a new term. They would call it spontaneous anatomical reanimation. They would write a paper about it, they would put it in science books, and they would just change the rules and say sometimes people are raised from the dead.

PRAYER: Thank you, God, for your magic and your miracles. Help us to accept the splendor of your power.

REFLECTION: Do you often try to de-mystify things in this world?

  1. I don’t think I try to demystify things in this world. I strongly believe in the Power of the Almighty God to work miracles the same today as He did in days of the past. Jesus Christ the same yesterday, today and forever. Heb. 13:8
