Right after Samuel met David, the Lord confirmed to the prophet that he was the one who would be king, and without wasting a minute, he anointed the young man. While he wouldn’t take the throne for many years, at the moment he was chosen, the Holy Spirit came upon David and he was filled with God’s presence. Interestingly, at the same time, the Holy Spirit left Saul, and almost immediately, the king was tormented by a demon. Desperate for comfort for his distressed soul, he commissioned his servants to search for a someone who could play music on the lyre. In a divinely-inspired turn of events, they found David, who happened to be one of the most skillful musicians in the land. Upon hearing of his prowess, the king sent for the shepherd (having no idea he had been anointed for the throne), and invited him into his chamber to play. The music soothed his spirit, so David submitted himself to the service of Saul, and they became very close. So trusted was he in the company of his king that he was asked to become one of his armor bearers, an honor that testified to the fact that there was a strong connection between the two of them. 

My friend, being anointed requires you to serve humbly, even before you’re appointed. Though you’ve been marked for greatness, the pathway to your destiny might demand that you submit to someone you will ultimately lead, at least for a season. In such moments, you are being tested, and it’s vital to remember that influence will be added to you as you empty yourself. When you follow the Lord’s heart and trust Him to fulfill His promise — even when things become more difficult — you’ll grow rich in wisdom, and He will reward you with an outcome far greater than anything you could have imagined.
