Why Did You Doubt?

“Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. ‘You of little faith,’ he said, ‘why did you doubt?’ “

– Matthew 14:31

I want to remind you that in Jesus’ day, the disciples were not just students; they were instructed to do everything the Rabbi did. For instance, Jesus teaches the disciples by demonstrating the miracle of healing the sick. He then instructs them to go out to pray for the sick and watch them be healed. These assignments can be found in Luke Chapters Nine and Ten.

Remember the famous story of Jesus walking on water? Peter thinks to himself that he’s a disciple, which means he’s supposed to do it too, so he begins to walk on water. But as he looks around and sees the waves and becomes scared, he starts to sink slowly. I still think this is an amazing feat. Jesus then takes Peter’s hand and grabs him, and He asks why he doubted himself. Why did you doubt what I called you to do?

Friend, God is teaching us to get to a place of faith, where we can believe and do the things that Jesus did. But in order to get to that place, we have to have a new understanding and relationship with failure. We cannot give into the fear of failure. We must recognize, even in our walk with God, that if we sin, at times we may think “we will never get over this struggle.” Understand we have to experience multiple failures in our lives to become the person we’re called to be. There is a process behind every successful person that makes us resilient, especially in God’s Kingdom!

Prayer

Thank you, Lord, that in your Kingdom, it’s never over until I win. Lord, you can call me to keep failing until I succeed.
