“Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.”

– 1 Peter 5:8-9

Yesterday we were encouraged through the words of the Apostle Peter to “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” He then tells God’s people to “be alert” because our enemy is like a roaring lion seeking to devour us. A fact obvious to anyone who has observed lions is that lions don’t roar before they devour. Animals are not louder when hunting; they are quieter, isn’t that right? Here’s what we know about this roaring lion: It’s all bark and no bite! What is the point of roaring before devouring? If it’s hunting, why would it draw attention to itself? That wouldn’t happen. It’s because the enemy isn’t a lion; it’s a snake who deceives and tricks you, and wants to inflict fear in your life.

This is who Satan is and what Satan represents. When he “roars,” he is trying to figure out which of his opponents will be a coward and afraid. He’s looking for who will give up, and who will give in to fear and procrastination. He wants to know who will be consumed and fall victim to his deceitful ways.

Friend, Peter tells you to stand firm in your faith because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of suffering. Be encouraged by one of my favorite promises in verse 10: “And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.” God will lead us to victory, so you don’t have to be afraid!

Prayer

Father, alert me to the enemy’s tactics and help me resist them.
