“For if the willingness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has, not according to what one does not have.”

– 2 Corinthians 8:12

When I was living with my family in Oklahoma in my teenage years, we really weren’t going to church a lot. We were all believers, but our spiritual life was kind of stagnant. Thankfully, there was an older couple named the Meechums who lived in the house behind ours. They were super-nice Christian people, and full of the Holy Spirit. My sister started going over there when she was 17, and simply by being in their presence, she caught a fire in her soul that was just amazing. We all befriended them, and before long, each of us was sharing in their passion and enjoying a newfound connection with Jesus. All of this simply because they welcomed us into their home, offered us milk and cookies, and prayed with us. Though at the time it didn’t seem terribly significant, their legacy is felt throughout our family and even in this ministry. I am who I am because they simply made themselves available.

Friend, availability is the key to impact in the Kingdom of God! It’s great to have dreams, goals, and ideas, but don’t get so caught up in your head that you miss opportunities to minister to those in the immediate space around you. Take time for the simple things, and never underestimate the Holy Spirit’s ability to work through an encouraging word, hug, batch of cookies, or simple prayer. When your heart is ready, Jesus is more than able to bring people into your midst who need what you have. Don’t forget: Little things done in service to others can change the world in a big way!

Jesus, please use me to impact the immediate space around me.

How have you been impacted by another’s willingness to simply be available?
