“I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you” -Genesis 12:3
Tradition speaks to the idea that when we curse people, we get a little cursed, but when we bless people, we get a lot of blessings. Just like you can’t paint a house without getting a little paint on yourself, you can’t curse somebody without getting a little bit on yourself. That’s why very often you see some of the most vitriolic, angry, cursing-type people seem to have the worst luck. They don’t even realize it — they’re just splattering paint everywhere and they’re getting it all over themselves. But people — even when they’re persecuted or going through trials — bless others, they are just splattering themselves with blessing. People don’t realize that, in a way, you’re a conduit from either heaven or hell because when you open up your spiritual life to others, it’s going to touch you, too. When you bless others, you’ll be blessed. It’s one of the best reasons to bless your enemies. It brings good luck. It blesses you. Things go better in life.
PRAYER: Thank you, God, for giving us the opportunity to bless and be blessed.
REFLECTION: How have you received blessings when you’ve blessed someone?
