ROCK4CHOC: Hour of Power in the Community

At Shepherd’s Grove and Hour of Power, we strive to share God’s love and dignity with the people in the 15 feet of space around us. We’re excited for the opportunity to donate our campus on Sunday, August 5th from 4-7 pm, for ROCK4CHOC, a concert to benefit Children’s Hospital of Orange County. CHOC Children’s does incredible work for kids and families dealing with health crises. Every year, they host the CHOC Walk in the Park — a fundraiser walk held at Disneyland that brings in people from all over the country to raise money for these families. Many walkers have children, friends, or family members that have been or are currently treated by CHOC, while some walk in honor of someone who has passed away. Teams are compromised of many people from Orange County, including Team DAPS Magic, which has a number of Hour of Power staff that participate.

Hour of Power Choir Tour: The Conclusion!

Our Hour of Power Choir is back in America, safe and sound. From what we’ve heard, they had a great time! We wanted to share some more incredible moments from their adventures and performances. On Monday, June 25th, they toured the city of Arnhem and enjoyed some delicious crepes with some of our Hour of Power Netherlands staff before heading to the Royal Grote Kerk in Apeldoorn for their first concert. Choir member, Joslyn, shares her thoughts on their trip to the Netherlands on day 5 and what she was most excited for during their first concert.   Following their adventures in Arnhem, they traveled to Apeldoorn to prepare for their first concert, which was held at the Royal Grote Kerk, a beautiful church! Abdiel Gonzalez shared his thoughts before they performed in the incredible venue.   We received a video of our beloved choir performing during this breathtaking evening.

Missions Minute: Mike Sunker and the 5C’s

“Bring the little children to me and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to them.” -Matthew 19:14 Recently at Shepherd’s Grove and Irvine Presbyterian Church, we were honored to welcome Rev. Mike Sunker to share about his ministry! He is the founder and director of Christ Church Christian Care Center (5Cs) in Johannesburg, South Africa. 5Cs currently houses, clothes, feeds, and educates over 70 children. 5Cs is an oasis in Johannesburg’s Hillbrow district, an impoverished area with vast numbers of homeless children, high crime, and rampant HIV/AIDS infection. The objectives of the 5C’s ministry are:  Rescue homeless and vulnerable children from the cycle of poverty.  Restore their self-worth and dignity.  Provide a safe environment where they can pursue their dreams and aspirations.  Encourage a relationship with Christ through the Gospel.  Although the 5Cs is caring for 70 needy children, they don’t have space and resources to accommodate more children from the community. How long have you been with the ministry? THE ministry, or this one? I’ve been involved in the business of church for a good long while (I even taught karate for a church, long story), and have been with Hour of Power for a couple years now. What do you do for Hour of Power? Right now, I research, invite, coordinate with, and host the many wonderful guests our church and program has every week, as they interview and perform for our congregation and viewers around the world. How did God bring you to the ministry? I met Robert Laird while working in that mice-infested theme park down the road, who asked me to come in for an interview after establishing a good friendship through his website, dapsmagic.com. I fully expected to spend the rest of my life working at Disney, but the Lord’s plans don’t always line up with

Hour of Power Choir Tour Update

The Hour of Power Choir is about half-way through their tour in the Netherlands, and we have received some photos from our choir conductor, Dr. Messoloras. They arrived on Friday afternoon, and here is what Dr. Messoloras had to say upon their arrival: “We were greeted by friendly people from the ministry and taken on a beautiful dinner canal boat ride. We are SO excited to sing. Our first concert is just a few days away!” Here are some of the photos from their tour of Amsterdam and canal ride. On Saturday, Dr. Messoloras told us that they “sang for the elderly community housed within a Salvation Army unit, as well as toured downtown Amsterdam. Wonderful hospitality by our Netherlands ministry.” Our wonderful Hour of Power Netherlands family filmed part of an impromptu performance in the streets of downtown Amsterdam.   We hope you enjoy these updates! Keep following along

How long have you been with the ministry? I have been with the ministry for about a year and a half. What do you do for Hour of Power? I am the Executive Assistant to the Executive Director of Operations, as well as IT help desk. How did God bring you to the ministry? Before I found this job, or rather this job found me, I was working in sales. I didn’t feel like I was making a positive difference in the world as much as I desired. When I began seeking other opportunities, I stumbled upon a Social Media Strategist job opening through a staffing agency. Despite receiving minimal information about the position, there must have been immediate chemistry between the interviewers and me, because I was hired on the spot. The position as well as the work environment was exactly what I needed, for my emotional, mental, and

Hour of Power Choir to Tour Around Netherlands!

The Hour of Power Choir has been a staple of this ministry since long before the television program, Hour of Power, was even an idea! They used to perform on the snack shack of the old drive-in church and grew just as our ministry did. Over the years, their powerful anthems, harmonious hymns, and incredible direction have led them to become a world-renowned choir. They are embarking on their Beloved tour this Thursday, June 21st, and will perform in some of the most beautiful locations in the Netherlands during their 9-day tour. During their visit, they will take in many of the sights and sounds of Amsterdam will be performing impromptu concerts around the city and in stunning churches like the Roayl Grote Kerk in Apeldoorn, the Basiliek in Veenendaal, and a sold-out show at the Nieuwe Kerk in Delft. We’re so excited for our choir! It should be a fantastic trip, and we’re

Staff Spotlight: Phuong Nguyen

You may have seen our security guard, Phuong, driving the golf cart around our campus at Irvine Presbyterian Church (no one drives slower than him … it’s a skill), or greeting church, staff, and visitors at the church on Sundays and throughout the week. No matter where you saw him though, chances are that he was smiling. Phuong Nguyen has been with Hour of Power for 16 years: first, at the Crystal Cathedral, then, at Shepherd’s Grove/Hour of Power in Garden Grove, and now, at Shepherd’s Grove/Hour of Power in Irvine. But Phuong isn’t originally from Orange Country. He was born and raised in Vietnam and joined the Vietnamese Air Force as a helicopter pilot when he was a young man. However, when he was 22 years old, communism was on the rise and he was forced to flee Vietnam without his family. Just two days before the communists completely took over, Phuong successfully flew and
