“Now fear the Lord and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your ancestors worshiped beyond the Euphrates River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.”

– Joshua 24:14-16

For a lot of us, a new year means getting a brand new calendar to fill with all the things we hope to accomplish. The idea of resolutions is that we take on a few huge goals, and working towards them typically proves to be a lofty task. All too often, circumstances get in the way, the unexpected happens, and we come to realize that we won’t be able to check many of them off of our list. Though it can be disheartening, it’s important to remember that life isn’t changed by monumental leaps but rather by a series of small choices. When we understand this, we can adjust our thinking and make daily decisions that won’t overwhelm us. Instead of conquering great feats, we can focus on simple steps and know that even if we don’t get to where we hoped to be, we really did make progress. Though there are many noble pursuits to aspire to, the most life-changing decision we can make today, and every day, is to be with Jesus. Whether that means spending time in prayer, going to church each Sunday, or reading our Bibles often, only by resting in Him can we find the strength and power to change other aspects of our lives.

My friend, the most important thing you can do is choose the Lord. Coming to His feet doesn’t have to be a momentous occasion; you can trust Him moment-by-moment and day-by-day. When you turn your back on pursuits that don’t have meaning and make His Kingdom your top priority, He will empower you to do more than you ever thought possible! Then, when you get to Heaven, your Savior will be standing by your side advocating for you because you forsook the gods of the world and gave your heart completely to Him. Whatever happens in the days ahead, don’t turn away from what truly matters. Keep your eyes focused on Jesus, and you will go far!

Prayer

Jesus, help me to consistently choose you and to make small decisions every day that have a big impact on my life and the lives of others.

Reflection

How will you yield your heart completely to the Lord this year?
