I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.

Luke 15:7

In Luke 15, Jesus told the pharisees the parable about a shepherd who had 100 sheep. One day, he took the sheep to the pasture, and realized there were only 99. So the shepherd immediately left them there, and went off with the other shepherds to find the missing one. Picture this: a shepherd out in the hills, in the elements, looking for his one lost sheep. He knows the sheep by name, so he’s walking around and calling his name out. Meanwhile, all of the townspeople are waiting at home, wondering where the shepherd and his sheep is. Then, all of a sudden, you see the shepherd (they are usually young kids), coming over the hill with the sheep over his shoulders. He and his pet, really, are coming down the hill. Everyone’s cheering as the shepherd exclaims, “I found him! I found him! He was down by the river. I got him! It’s okay! The whole town celebrates because the shepherd found this last, lost sheep. Jesus looks at these religious leaders and He says, “Let me tell you, friends, there will be more celebration in heaven over one sinner who repents than over the 99 who live perfect lives” (Luke 15:7). The subscript here, by the way, is that we’re all lost sheep. But there is joy when the lost sheep come home.

Prayer

God, I want to always return home to you. Thank you for being such a loving father, that you would leave the 99 to come find me.
