Imagine the disciples, students of Jesus, arguing about greatness. To address their debate, Jesus brings a child into their midst and says, “Here’s the way to become great: invite this child.” Why does welcoming a child bring true greatness? It’s completely contrary to the world’s thinking. But in God’s wisdom, it’s because children cannot pay you back.

As Christians, we believe the universe is just and rightly ordered by God. When you care for someone who cannot repay you, God Himself becomes your rewarder. His blessing far surpasses anything that this world or any wealthy person could provide. For those who are parents, foster parents, or mentors, the rewards of investing in children are often intangible but deeply fulfilling. Most would say that raising or caring for children is among the most meaningful and fruitful experiences in life.

My friend, Jesus calls us to go against the world’s ways by inviting and receiving little children. Yes, it’s difficult, time-consuming, and costly—raising a child in America averages $200,000, without counting college or weddings! But Jesus teaches that when we welcome a child in His name, we welcome Him. In caring for the vulnerable, we align with God’s heart and participate in His kingdom. When we love those who cannot repay us, our heavenly Father sees and rewards us in ways this world never could. May we always open our hearts to the little ones, knowing that as we do so, we welcome God’s presence and reflect His love to those around us.
