“She came along just as Simeon was talking with Mary and Joseph, and she began praising God. She talked about the child to everyone who had been waiting expectantly for God to rescue Jerusalem.”

– Luke 2:38,39

Yesterday, we learned about Anna the prophetess and how she devoted herself to a life of service to God after she was widowed at a young age. Interestingly, because she was such a passionate seeker of the Lord’s heart, and since she walked so closely with the Holy Spirit, as soon as she saw Jesus at the temple, she began to worship. And while there were thousands of people present there on the day He was dedicated, she knew there was something special about this child. Though to most onlookers He appeared to be just another baby, she recognized Him for who He was, and her excitement bubbled over as she began sharing with all who were awaiting the coming of the Messiah. More than being a mere mortal, she saw in this infant the Creator’s perfect plan for the salvation of humanity, and the joy in her spirit was contagious! Fast-forward to today, and you and I are the benefactors of this baby’s finished work. Because the Holy Spirit dwells within us, like Anna, we can remain connected to Him every moment of every day. His temple is in our hearts, and as we choose to consistently embrace Him, He reveals to us hidden treasures and divine truths that others may not readily see.

My friend, you were made to walk and talk with Jesus. Though you are bound by a body of flesh, you live in two parallel worlds — the physical and the spiritual — and while the latter is invisible, it surrounds you all the time. As you embrace this fact and invest your life in pursuit of what cannot be seen, you board the steady train to God’s greater plan and purpose. Though the world chases after only that which it perceives with its senses, as you partake in Christ’s eternal work, He unearths deep spiritual mysteries that people may not easily recognize or understand. Even better, He invites you to share them.

Prayer

Jesus, like Anna, I want to walk with you so closely that I see what you’re doing around me, even when others don’t.

Reflection

Can you discern the Holy Spirit’s work around you?
