“But the Lord said to him, ‘Peace! Do not be afraid. You are not going to die.’ ”

– Judges 23:6

When Gideon led an army of 32,000 men against a force of 135,000, the odds seemed impossible—almost five to one. Naturally, Gideon turned to the Lord and pleaded for more soldiers. But God responded with a surprising command: “You need fewer men.” God instructed Gideon to send home all the fearful soldiers. Imagine being told, “If anyone is afraid, leave.” Facing 135,000 with only a fraction of his original force, Gideon obeyed. Why? Because you cannot win a battle with soldiers gripped by fear. In fact, a fearful soldier is more dangerous than having no soldier at all. After this reduction, only the courageous remained. In the end, Gideon triumphed—not because of numbers, but because he walked by faith.

You might think, “I can’t help how I feel.” But the good news is, my friend, you can dismiss and cast down those feelings by speaking God’s truth, just as Jesus did when He declared, “It is written.” Like strengthening a muscle, this takes practice and perseverance. Scripture tells us in Joshua 1:9: “Be strong and very courageous.” God says, “Have I not commanded you? Do not be afraid.” Likewise, God instructs us, “Do not be discouraged.” You can choose to be discouraged or to obey God.

My friend, the best is yet to come! Strengthen your faith and stand firm on what the Lord has promised. Reject any fear that tries to take root in your heart or mind. Declare God’s truth: “It is written.” Speak boldly, “I will fear no evil.” Then, move forward—take action. Step out in faith, even if it feels risky. Make that call. Put your dream on paper. Take that next step, and let God transform your courage into victory.

Prayer

Father, give me the strength to remain courageous—not because of what I have, but because I trust in You.
