The Sadducees, who were behind Jesus’ death, also led much of the early Church’s persecution. They were responsible for Stephen’s martyrdom and likely for James being killed by Herod Agrippa, the first of the apostles to die for his faith. Emboldened by these acts, this powerful religious group, which denied anything supernatural, targeted Peter and John, who continued to share Jesus’ message despite threats and fear.

Because of their relentless opposition to the Savior, the Sadducees were repeatedly confronted with undeniable acts of spiritual power—miracles, healings, transformed lives, and many other events that clearly challenged their worldview. Time after time, they witnessed proof that the Lord moved supernaturally, accomplishing things far beyond their control or understanding. Yet, rather than humbling themselves in light of these realities, they stubbornly clung to a contrived version of God—one who fit within the boundaries of a religion they manipulated. Ultimately, their intense jealousy drove them to persist in maintaining control at all costs.

Friend, don’t let fear of the unknown keep you from seeing and embracing what you can’t explain. In your walk with God, some things will always be beyond your understanding and control. Instead of running from what’s mysterious or trying to fit Jesus into a box, accept that He is greater than you can grasp. Closing your mind leads to misery and opposition; openness brings growth and freedom. Let go of the need to explain everything, and your relationship with God will grow far beyond what intellect alone can achieve.
