Every Job Has Two Salaries

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

– Matthew 6:19-21

There is something we can do today to improve our lives: We can understand that every job, every calling, every organization we ever work with that pays us — pays us twice. The first payment is almost worthless, and that’s the one that’s money. The second payment is how you develop as a person and how you positively impact others; that’s the kind that will carry you for the rest of your life. The only thing you take to Heaven is who you become.

The first salary, or paycheck, is what we call an “earthly treasure,”  and that’s the one you’re most excited about getting, isn’t it?  On payday, typically the Friday of every other week, you’re ready to pay the family bills and go out and buy whatever you want, like a hat, some cupcakes, clothes, or whatever is important to you. However, the second payment is more valuable. It’s the opportunity that’s afforded to you to get to know someone and learn something new. It’s the chance to grow as a person, to hone your skills, elevate in your calling, or simply to pray for someone. Unfortunately, most people throw that payment away if they don’t value it.

Friend, compared to the first salary, the second salary is more precious. It carries the most weight and treasure. It’s a chance to make a difference in someone’s life. The heavenly treasures you build in your heart as you show love and concern for others are valued by God the most!

Prayer

Father, teach me how to see the value in the second payment and how to pray for others.

Reflection

In what ways do you show love and concern for others?

  1. I’ve been praying for an answer. I’ve got an opportunity for a supervisor position and I’m teetering on the fence about it. I won’t have the weekends off anymore if I take the position. I’ve worked too hard and too long to lose my happy time. It would benefit my family and my retirement but I’m afraid that my happiness will be on the chopping block. I’ve been working within that position but haven’t taken the spot yet. It’s a very stressful situation to be in. There is racial hate within our office. I’m just not sure what I should do. I love everyone and give respect even when it’s not given back. I’ve enjoyed reading this today. Thank you

  2. Never thought about it that way, I realize and knowing you cannot take material things to heaven, but yourself. People need to be reminded
of that daily. I appreciate your ministry.
