“Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”

– Luke 6:38

Yesterday we talked about living life with open hands. Today, I want to build on that idea by sharing with you a somewhat spiritual law that enables you to maintain this posture of openness: give away what you desire most

I firmly believe that one of the best ways to invite God’s blessing into our lives is to give to others the thing that we feel we most lack. To some of you, this may sound like a radical proposition. In light of what the world teaches, it just may be. However, the idea behind it is that the more you give away, the more room you have to be filled up with blessings. For example, think of a container that is about half full of water after a long hike in the sun. If you are thirsty, it will be very tempting to hold onto every last drop of that liquid and not to share it, even if you know that there are others around you who are also thirsty. Nevertheless, I believe that when you choose to pour water into the cup of others in an effort to bless them, Jesus will not only replace what you give away, but He will fill you to the point of overflowing with His Living Water — the kind that far exceeds anything you have ever known or tasted!

Friend, one of the best ways to receive is always to give! One of the best ways to invite opportunity is to give opportunity, and one of the best ways to be loved is to love others. Sadly, when you hold onto things because you are afraid of not having enough, you only lose more. On the contrary, when you stop protecting and defending what you have, you invite showers of God-sized gifts! In fact, Jesus’ abundance is so great that He will give you more than you need and you will continually bless others with the overflow! The Lord wants to open up the Heavens and pour out friendship, joy, kindness and eternal life for you, so let go of what you think you need and receive His best in your circumstances!

Prayer

Teach me, Jesus, to give away the things that I think I need most and to trust you to replace them with your Heavenly abundance.

Reflection

What do you feel you lack in your life today? Do you believe that giving it away will invite God’s blessing? Why or why not?
