“Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”

– Luke 6:38

Yesterday we talked about living life with open hands. Today, I want to build on that idea by sharing with you a kind of spiritual law that enables you to maintain this posture of openness: give away what you most desire.

I firmly believe that one of the best ways to invite God’s blessing into our lives is to give to others the thing that we feel we most lack. To some of you this may sound radical, and in light of what the world teaches, it is; however, the idea behind it is that the more you give away, the more room you have to be filled up with good things. For example, think of a container that is about half-full of water. If you are thirsty, it will be very tempting to hold onto every last drop of that liquid and not to share it, even if you know that there are others around you who are more parched than you are. Nevertheless, I believe that when you choose to pour what you have into the cup of others, Jesus not only replaces what you give away, but He fills you to overflowing with Living Water — the kind that far exceeds anything you have ever tasted or known!

Friend, one of the best ways to get is always to give! One of the most powerful ways to invite opportunity is to give opportunity, and one of the most genuine ways to be loved is to love others. Sadly, when you hold onto things because you are afraid of not having enough, you only lose more. On the contrary, when you stop protecting and defending what you have, you invite showers of God-sized gifts! In fact, Jesus’ abundance is so great that He will give you more than you need, and you will continually bless others with the overflow! The Lord wants to open up the Heavens and pour out friendship, joy, kindness, and eternal life for you, so let go of what you think you need and receive His best in all your circumstances!

Prayer

Teach me, Jesus, to give away the things that I think I most need. I trust you to replace my lack with Heavenly abundance.
