“Everyone will be salted with fire. Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can you make it salty again? Have salt among yourselves, and be at peace with each other.”

– Mark 9:49,50

For the past few days, we’ve talked about salt being both a force of preservation and purity in the world. Today, I want to discuss the third (and most important) property of this potent mineral, and that is flavor. Let’s face it — salt is delicious! Whether on chips, meat, or french fries, it enhances taste. In fact, it’s hard to imagine life without this powerful mineral because in its absence, food would be plain bland. Since eating is a major source of enjoyment and the primary manner in which we sustain life, flavor is really important. Of course, if this is true physically, it’s even more true spiritually. As Christians, we are the salt of the earth, and it’s our call to bring divine zest to society. Nothing is worse than a drab and boring believer — yet that’s how a lot of us “taste” to the watching world. Though we are called to be holy like Jesus is holy, this doesn’t make us dreary. On the contrary, as we look to and lean on Him, the brighter and more radiant we become. Through the infilling of His Spirit, our passions are stirred in a mighty way, and His presence in us shines from deep inside. As we walk hand-in-hand with our Savior, we’re equipped to live abundantly so that others are drawn to His splendor and glory as it pours out from within.

My friend, you bring flavor to the world! You are a precious and unique child of God, and He is using your life to shine light and hope on the hearts and dreams of others. Every day, He invites you to step into the fullness of His joy and to receive from Him fountains of living water that flow effortlessly to the people around you. As you root yourself in Him, He seasons your days with good and perfect gifts that bring a sweet aroma to all who cross your path.

Prayer

Jesus, I am blessed to be the salt of the earth. Use me to bring divine flavor to many lives.
