“No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.” -Matthew 6:24
We can become such slaves to what we do. Slaves to what we have. Slaves to what people think about us. We can become such slaves to circumstance, slaves to the future, slaves to the stars, slaves to trauma and tragedy, slaves to image, slaves to money, slaves to dress, slaves to all of these things.
And you know what? All of that’s going to go away someday. Then, what will be left? Eternal life. God’s fullness and love.
And we don’t have to wait to die to get that. If we have faith, we have it right now and carry it with us for the rest of our lives. With faith in God as our loving, forgiving, grace-giving Father, everything becomes different. We’re his beloved child whether we believe it or not. Why not believe it? Believe it because it’s true.
PRAYER: Dear Lord, thank you for your love. I don’t deserve this kind of love. You are not like me. You do not shift on a whim. Thank you for loving me, anyway. Amen.
REFLECTION: What are you a slave to? Money? Power? Success? God’s love?
