“One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.“
– Proverbs 18:24
![]() It is incredibly important to surround yourself with the right people. Ever present in human nature is the fact that we become like the people we hang out with! This has been proven in hundreds of studies — we simply cannot help ourselves. Did you know that the number one reason addicts relapse after being clean and sober for years is they begin to socialize with their old friends? It is human nature to love people and to dislike being alone, but people affect us. How we think, what we want, and how we view the world are all influenced by people. Friend, my suggestion is to join a group where your desired behavior is the norm for them. You will then begin to emulate their attitudes and characteristics. “But Pastor Bobby, we are supposed to love the prostitute, tax collector, and the outsider.” And yes, it is absolutely essential that we do that. But when you look at Jesus in the community, you see a circle and an inner circle. Every person is loved by Jesus, and he invites everyone to share in the Kingdom of God. Yet, there is a special place reserved for the 12 among his disciples. To be a witness in this world and also have a strong inner circle is important. As you invite the Holy Spirit to empower you, you will continue to bloom where you are planted! |
Prayer
Father, help me to be influenced by the right people.
Reflection
Are you surrounded by the right people? What is the state of your inner circle?
