We learned yesterday that David was a skilled musician, but he was also a skilled warrior. In fact, when the Jews were in a major battle with the Philistines, he was the only one who dared to go out and fight Goliath, who was a giant enemy intimidator. The Bible says that there were two hills with a great valley in between, and on each hill, opposing armies were staged. In an effort to frighten the Jews and get them to back down, every night, they would send Goliath, who was about nine feet tall, to stand at the edge of the hill and hurl insults at the people of God. But who was this famous giant? In many ways, the fabled villain was an archetype of Satan himself. In fact, Hebrew scholars love to recount that he was six cubits tall, he carried six weapons, and his spearhead was six thousand shekels. If you look at how that adds up, the giant was marked by the number 666. Whether or not this is historically true, there’s no denying that much about the ancient warrior epitomizes the manner in which the devil seeks to intimidate. He was noisy, blustery, arrogant, and scary on the outside, but easily knocked down by one small stone slung in faith. 

My friend, when you face giants in your life, remember the greatness of your God! Though Satan can look threatening, he is only a shadow, and he must flee at the Name of Jesus. While he can intimidate and make noise, he has no power over your future, so you needn’t live in fear of him. Yes, he works hard to get you to crumble, but when you sling one tiny stone of faith his way, the Holy Spirit’s power hits him between the eyes and he is forced to leave. As you move in the authority of your Savior, I am confident that divine victory will find you and every giant will fall!
