I remember when Shepherd’s Grove was located in St. Callistus in Garden Grove, California. We were looking for a way out of our lease, which was very expensive and crushing our ministry. We could not afford it and had no place to go. As we attempted to buy the building, our landlord had already sold it but didn’t inform us. Because our landlord contract gave us the first right of refusal, we could have easily pursued legal action, but we chose not to. We didn’t think that was a good or wise use of our time or money.
I took the landlord’s actions as a sign that maybe God had something else in store. Pastor Russ had been in conversation with the former pastor of Irvine Presbyterian Church and said they might be interested in entering into a merger with us. I knew this would really help us with our situation. I remember growing up Presbyterian and attending Hollywood Presbyterian with my mom. But my reaction when I spoke with Pastor Russ was, “Lord, do you really want us to be Presbyterian?” But then I heard a rebuke from the Lord: Do not call unclean what I have called clean. And I knew in my heart this merger was a confirmation of God’s plan right then and there.
Friend, this process was so easy because it was God’s idea. As we proceeded, there were other people that tried to make things difficult, but I just did not worry or become anxious. I thought I don’t know how the details will come to pass, but God told me this was His idea. Sure enough, the merger happened between Irvine Presbyterian and Shepherds Grove and we are so grateful! It has been such a blessing. Let’s continue to listen to God’s voice. He will tell us how to approach difficult situations in a relaxed way. It’s so much easier to let go, and let God when God talks to you and shares what He is up to!
