“So we can confidently say, ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?’ ”

– Hebrews 13:6

Yesterday I shared that the fear of the Lord isn’t about dreading punishment; it’s about honoring God’s boundaries and wisdom. My dad, even when disciplining us, was really a softie at heart. I remember once when I’d done something wrong and was sure I’d be in big trouble; I headed to bed early, pretending to be asleep. As soon as he arrived, hearing him stomp up the stairs and call my name, my heart pounded with anxiety. The door opened quickly, then closed quietly—and I got away with it. My dad could seem intimidating, but he was also so loving, always ready with a hug or a compliment.

At school, I was still a little guy, and some of the older kids bullied me because of my size. To make matters worse, my teacher was notoriously mean to everyone, and I was afraid of her. But one day, my dad walked me to school. With him by my side, the bullies left me alone, and I felt unafraid. Why? Because I had my dad with me—a good dad who made me feel safe. Later, at the school’s open house, I saw my intimidating teacher act remarkably kind and polite to my dad. In that moment, I realized something important: people treat you differently when they see the strength standing with you.

My friend, here’s what we learn: the fear of dad—or rather, respect for his presence—is the beginning of wisdom. When the father is near, there’s no need to be afraid. In the same way, when the Bible speaks of the fear of the Lord, it isn’t about unhealthy fear, but about recognizing God’s power and goodness. When you know God is with you, you know that He’s greater than any challenge, disease, or obstacle.

Prayer

Father, help me walk in wisdom, honoring your presence each day.
