“The Lord came and stood there, calling as at the other times, ‘Samuel! Samuel!’
Then Samuel said, ‘Speak, for your servant is listening.’ And the Lord said to Samuel: ‘See, I am about to do something in Israel that will make the ears of everyone who hears about it tingle.’ ”
– 1 Samuel 3:10,11
![]() Our topic for today is the wonderful story of the prophet Samuel. It begins with this profound statement by the author: “And the word of the Lord was precious in those days; there was no open vision.” What does this mean? Simply put, everyone wanted to hear from God. They wanted to see what He was doing, but they were unable to hear, see, or feel it. They wanted to experience something but they were disconnected from Him. Samuel’s mother, Hannah, has a miracle pregnancy and as a result, commits him to the Lord as a baby. God begins to train Samuel, who later becomes a prophet for His people. As a young boy, Samuel is dedicated to the care of Eli the High Priest. One day, Samuel is awakened by God’s voice in his sleep but he does not recognize it. Eli instructs him to reply, “Speak Lord, your servant is listening.” And I paraphrase what the Lord said through Samuel to those who wanted to hear His voice: “I’ll do something in Israel that will tingle everyone’s ears.” Friend, it’s wonderful to hear God’s response. His words should tingle ears and touch hearts. I hope that word holds true for us today. The words God is about to speak over your life will make your ears tingle. I believe it will be a good thing. He loves you and is for you, not against you. He forgives you, and He stands by you. You’re going to benefit from what He says to you! |
Prayer
Father, develop my ability to hear the words you speak to me.
Reflection
Is it possible for you to benefit from what God speaks to you? In what way will you respond?
