“Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue lasts only a moment.”

– Proverbs 12:19

The most important trait that distinguishes a true leader is integrity. In fact, I don’t think there is a more treasured or valued quality in today’s world than being transparently authentic. Nothing cultivates serenity of heart and mind like being honest, both with ourselves and with others. There is a reward for truthfulness that far outweighs the temporary discomfort of having to speak openly in tough or awkward situations.

Have you ever worked for someone who was not straightforward? I know I have, and it was one of the most unpleasant experiences of my life. Nobody wants to follow a person who’s secretive and can’t be trusted. In fact, it can be almost maddening when you’re not certain that the one who’s leading you is being forthright about how you’re doing or where you’re going. When you work for that type of person and go seeking honest feedback, you won’t get it because they view you as a competitor, not as a member of the same team. Such individuals have made dishonesty a habit, and once they have violated your trust, it’s hard to rebuild it.

Unfortunately, a few little lies, if not exposed and turned around, can lead a person to a lifestyle of game playing and deception, but trust me, friend, this is not God’s best for you! I implore you to make honesty and integrity the hallmarks of your character. At home, with friends, or in your workplace, be a person who others can count on to tell the truth, even if it costs you something, or everything. Live life openly and authentically, and watch as the Lord increases your influence and uses your transparency to change the environments and cultures in which you lead.
