How Can We Gain Wisdom?

“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.”

– James 1:5-7

My question today is: How do we gain wisdom? The Bible, in the book of James, teaches that wisdom is often found during and after seasons of perseverance. Many of us are familiar with difficult times—struggles at work, challenges with our health, financial hardships, or family issues. We know the relief that comes when these trials are finally behind us and things work out in the end.

At the end of those seasons, when God brings us through, we have an opportunity to reflect and grow—to find the lesson, to gain wisdom from the experience. Yet, human nature often makes us too exhausted to look back. I feel this too; after adversity, who wants to revisit something painful? Let me encourage you: those moments are prime opportunities to gain wisdom.

My friend, the book of James teaches that perseverance creates space for wisdom to grow—if we take time to reflect. How do we actually receive wisdom? James instructs us to simply: Ask. But we must ask with faith, without doubting. He compares doubters to ships tossed by the sea, uncertain and lost. So approach God with confidence, believing He will give you wisdom. This is the beauty of God’s promise: If you want wisdom, ask, and you will receive; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you.

Prayer

Father, today I come before You with confidence, trusting in Your promise to give wisdom to those who seek it.

Reflection

When God brings you through a trial, do you pause to reflect—searching for the lesson and the wisdom gained along the way?
