It All Starts With the Heart

“May the Lord direct your hearts into God’s love and Christ’s perseverance.“

– 2 Thessalonians 3:5

It is a daily ritual for me to write down my goals. Like a captain, I believe it is important for me to have a clear idea of where my ship is heading. When you ask any captain of a ship what the port of call is, he will tell you without hesitation. It would be great if we could all think about our lives in this manner! Our port of call or “direction of travel” may change, but it is important to keep track of it, so I write it down every day in my journal.

Here’s what I start with: I want to become the best husband and father in the world. Notice the key words here are “I want to become…” I understand every single day that I’m not the world’s greatest father and husband yet, but I’m working on it. My goal to be a better husband isn’t because I have a bad marriage, but because I want to be the best I can be!

Friend, I believe you can be better tomorrow than you are today. You’ll have a better life, a better marriage, a better everything as you get better. As you focus on improving in small ways, you’ll see improvement in every other part of your life as well. I am convinced that the healthier your family and personal relationships become, the more positive impact it will have on your job, your church, and even your country. I would like to share with you a simple truth — it all starts with the heart. As your heart changes, everything around you changes as well.

Prayer

Father, show me how I can improve my relationships in small ways.

Reflection

How do you stay focused on your goals? Do you write them down every day?
