“That same night the Lord said to him, ‘Take the second bull from your father’s herd, the one seven years old. Tear down your father’s altar to Baal and cut down the Asherah pole beside it. Then build a proper kind of altar to the Lord your God on the top of this height. Using the wood of the Asherah pole that you cut down, offer the second bull as a burnt offering.’”
– Judges 6:25,26
![]() Sometimes it just takes one person to change the tide of an entire culture. Certainly there are many instances of this throughout Scripture, but one lesser known example is Gideon. Living in the midst of a people forced into hiding as a consequence for bowing down to idols, he was determined to do things differently. Though he was just one man, his fearless determination captured the Lord’s attention, and an angel appeared to him to tell him that he had been chosen to save his people. Following divine instructions, Gideon boldly cut down the pagan altars in his father’s home and offered a sacrifice to the living God instead. When the people of the town woke the next morning and saw the altars destroyed, they sought the young man to take his life. However, his father defended him, and the Lord’s favor surrounded him. Within a short time, Gideon had become a revolutionary who raised up tribes to kick the Midianites out of the Hebrew land. Friend, as long as you have the power of the risen Christ living in you, nothing is impossible. You are a vessel who carries His light, and even if you are just one flickering flame in a sea of darkness, there is hope! When you take a stand for God and do the next right thing, your conviction can be a force that changes the course of history. Don’t succumb to your fear of man; instead, tear down the pagan altars that obscure His radiant glory, and allow Him to shine through you. You are a world-changer who operates in the power of the Spirit of the Most High God, and with His help, nothing can stop you! |
