“You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.”

– Hebrews 10:36

We’ve been talking a lot about taking action according to our faith, because I think it’s really important that we understand that movement is a vital component of having abundant life in Jesus. That said, I know that for at least a few of you, hearing about stepping out makes your stomach turn because you’ve experienced so much failure and rejection. Perhaps you’ve tried and tried and tried, but you’ve failed and failed and failed. Even though you are exhausted and you feel like you don’t have the energy, I give you an exhortation today: keep going!

There’s an old story about the circus that reminds me of how limited we can be by our own perceptions. The story goes that when circus masters would raise an elephant from a baby, they would drive a stake in the ground, tie a chain to that stake, and put it around the animal. Since the young elephant was unable to pull the stake out with her own weight, she internalized that feeling a tug meant she couldn’t go any further; that she was restricted. However, little did she know that once she was fully-grown, she had the power to pull a tree up by its roots, to pull down a circus tent, or anything else she wanted to; she just never became aware of her own weight. Any time she felt the slightest bit of resistance, she would stop, sit down, and give up the fight. Sadly, I think many of us are like that in our own hearts.

Friend, no matter what you’ve been told about your ability or potential, the truth is that nothing is impossible with God! Even if you’ve had words of discouragement and negativity spoken over you since you were a child, those utterings cannot stand against the Word of the Lord. He says you’ve been given everything you need to do whatever He calls you to do in His Name. Just like an elephant, you have incredible strength inside of you; don’t let the enemy’s tugs convince you otherwise. You will never know how far you can go until you take action. Do the next thing He’s calling you to, and He will meet you there in all His might and majesty!

Prayer

Jesus, I reject negative words that have been spoken over me and I put aside past failures. I believe that I will see your glory prevail in my life and circumstances as I choose to move forward.

Reflection

Do you identify with the elephant in the story above? Who or what has tugged on your heart, causing you to doubt your own potential? Will you embrace your inner strength today?
