Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming.  Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ.” -Ephesians 4:14-15

Every time we tell little white lies, we hide things, or we play hide and seek with the people we do life with — we’re training ourselves to be hidden people and to play it safe. We’re training ourselves to hide the hardest parts of our lives and as we do, we become more isolated and lonely. Why do we lie to people, why do we hide, why do we exaggerate, why do we bend the rules? Well, we lie in our very busy lives. Sometimes we lie because we just don’t want to go to whatever it is; to Aunt Suzie’s birthday. Or we don’t want to go to Joe’ retirement party, or whatever it is. We lie because we don’t want to be embarrassed; we lie because this lack of desire in our life is different than what we think another person sees in us. But, even little white lies can be bad for our souls.

PRAYER: Dear God, help us to promote the truth — even in the simplest things.

REFLECTION: How can you practice telling the truth today?
