“Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up, ‘Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?’ Jesus said, ‘Have the people sit down.’ There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down (about five thousand men were there). Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish. When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, ‘Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.’ So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten.”

– John 6:8-13

Today, I want to empower you with this thought: Jesus can create a multitude out of anything for you when you need it! There was one lad, exactly five loaves of bread, and two fishes in the story of the feeding of the 5,000. The issue was that the entire group was hungry. Despite this, everyone ate and was satisfied because a young boy cheerfully gave up the modest lunch he had brought for himself. Did you catch that part? They didn’t get a limited amount of bread because they were afraid of running out; instead, they ate as much as they wanted until they were satisfied; it was like an all-you-can-eat buffet! Even more incredible, there were 12 baskets of food leftover, which the disciples gathered at Jesus’ command, who told them not to waste any of the bread. Interestingly, the number 12 is related to faith throughout the Bible and is considered as a perfect number that represents God’s might and sovereignty. The Word, you see, is greater than bread!

Friend, when Jesus declared, “Man cannot live on bread alone,” He was implying that bread derives from the Word; in other words, human beings can only be nourished by their Creator. As Christians, we believe that Jesus created the universe by speaking it into existence and that everything under the sun was created by words that birthed energy and life. This is why you don’t ever have to worry about not having enough! Jesus, the Living Word, has spoken His abundant blessings over your life, and He will multiply even the tiniest gift until it overflows! God is all-powerful and all-knowing, but He cares about your needs. Why? Because He loves you more than you can imagine — that’s a reality you can base your life on!

Prayer

Jesus, I stand in awe that you can make a multitude out of what may be lacking and I thank you for your miraculous, multiplying power that is at work in my life.

Reflection

When has the Word (Jesus) multiplied a small thing in your life until it was overflowing? What is it that you require of Him today?
