On a Wing and a Prayer

I am often amused by the fact that many common sayings people use on a daily basis have origins that we are not even aware of. Did you know that “bite the bullet” – which we say to describe the courage we muster up to get through a difficult situation – came from a time before anesthetics when soldiers would bite a bullet to cope with surgery? Another popular expression that most of us have heard of, or maybe even said is, “on a wing and a prayer.” Historians have noted that this expression originated during World War II. It was heard in a film called Flying Tigers in 1942. One of the pilots in the military lost one wing of his airplane, so he was trying with all his might to land using only one wing and a prayer. I think many of us thought this saying was about the wing of a bird, not an airplane. And rightfully so, as we often see images of Jesus with outstretched arms and white doves floating about. 

My friend, I know that as we approach the end of the two-year mark of the pandemic, many of us can relate to living life “on a wing and a prayer.” We’re all just having to “wing it” when it comes to living life these days. Think of God as your co-pilot as we navigate through the winds of change and know that this is all part of God’s divine plan. You are loved beyond measure, and you are an integral part of our Hour of Power family!

God Will Provide

As we glide into March, we continue to honor the symbolism and imagery of beautiful birds and how they are revered throughout the Bible. “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?” –Matthew 6:25-27. 

As I read this verse, I am reminded that the good Lord will provide! Do not worry, because God is by your side and He hears your pleas and prayers. He is working mini miracles in your life that you may or may not even be aware of. You may not understand the breadth of them now, but in time, you will! In the above Scripture, Matthew reminds us that our Heavenly Father provides for everything in His Kingdom. In fact, did you know there are approximately 50 billion birds on Earth? That’s six times the number of humans! God has provided food and a habitat for all of these birds, just as He will provide for you. 

Collectively, We Thrive

I think about the spry sparrow in this analogy as well. Sparrows are small and flutter about with a tendency to congregate and nest in groups. At first glance, sparrows are seemingly unimpressive, plain brown birds, but did you know there are at least 35 species of them in North America? Look closely and you’ll see each species has distinctive markings. We are all identified as “people,” but when we take a closer look and get to know each other, we each have unique characteristics. That’s when something special happens. Like the sparrow, we may not look like we have much to offer – but we most certainly do! In 1 Corinthians 12:27 it states: “Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.” We each have certain traits and talents that we bring into this church community. Church is where many different people come together to worship for one cause, and that is to shine the light of the Holy Spirit for all to see! We have the opportunity to thrive together to become what God intended for the church to be. 

Even if your troubles are not grandiose, He is attentive to your individual struggles. God cares where you’re at in your journey with Him.

My friend, collectively we make a difference and are doing so around the world. In this grand universe, we are small like the delicate sparrow, but together there is strength in numbers! I pray that God steadily surrounds you with His love in the coming months, and I pray you continue to become a beacon of hope to others.

God loves you and so do I!
