“ ‘Martha, Martha,’ the Lord answered, ‘you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.’ .”

– Luke 10:41,42

Have you ever felt distracted, worried, or frustrated? Most of us have. Life can easily become crowded with tasks, demands, and noise, making it hard to notice the moments that matter—with God and with others. Like Martha, we often get caught up in doing, working, and serving, forgetting to simply be present. Martha worked hard to serve Jesus and His disciples, but her sister Mary chose to sit at Jesus’ feet, listening and learning from Him.

We might think one sister was right, and the other was wrong, but there is a time for both action and stillness. The challenge is finding balance. It’s easy to let the busyness of life push aside what matters most—time with our Heavenly Father. Work has its place, but so does rest. True peace comes from spending quiet moments in God’s presence.

My friend, while work and entertainment tend to blur your vision and offset your focus, you can make time to sit at the Lord’s feet and soak up His presence. While I empathize with Martha and her desire to serve her Savior with excellence, the reality is that Mary understood that true power actually comes from being still. Like these two sisters, you have a choice to make every day: you can be consumed by life’s cares or choose to commune with your Heavenly Father and hand your worries over to Him. Since He is ever-watchful and faithful, nothing delights Him more than when His children find joy, rest, and fulfillment in Him and Him alone.

Prayer

Jesus, when I become worried and overly busy with the activities of life, teach me to slow down and sit at your feet.
