“Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.”
– Philippians 3:13,14
![]() One Sunday, when I first started in a pastoral role at Hour of Power, I gave a message on moving forward. After I finished preaching, I quickly changed out of my suit and into a t-shirt, shorts, and flip flops and headed to downtown Orange, California, where I was pastoring another church. I started my 1999 Toyota Camry, which had over 200,000 miles and a ceiling that was beginning to sag, and as I was pulling out of the parking lot of the Crystal Cathedral, a horrible sound came from my car. Unfortunately, my transmission had gone out, and I was stuck! While other vehicles were honking and people were yelling at me to get out of the way, an older gentleman pulled around me in a beautiful luxury sedan. He looked at me and said, “You know, Bobby, sometimes we have to grieve our losses and move on! It’s time for you to get a new car.” Ironically, this was the sermon I had just preached to thousands of people in the service, and now, the lesson was coming back full circle. You see, like my old car, we often hold on to things that we need to move on from. Some may find themselves in a relationship that’s going nowhere while others may need to pull out of a business, ministry endeavor, or career that’s grown stagnant. Whatever it is, it’s time to press forward. Even though there’s fear and cost involved in making a change, taking the leap allows us to reap the rewards of surrendering our comfort zone to God’s power. My friend, if you’re presented with the opportunity to relinquish something good and take hold of something better, just do it! Especially in a season that’s found so many facing disappointments and setbacks, forge ahead with bold faith, and believe that your Savior has more in store for your future. He knows what you need when you need it, so even if circumstances don’t look victorious, you are more than a conqueror! You can win any battle in Christ’s mighty strength, because you can face it knowing that when you stumble, He will give you the endurance to persevere, press on, and push through. |
Prayer
Jesus, teach me to trust you when you are calling me to release and relinquish the past so I can embrace something better.
Reflection
In what areas of your life do you need to let something go to make room for something greater?
If you’re unable to attend your local church or need some additional weekly inspiration, be sure to tune into Hour of Power every Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. PT on TBN or watch online at hourofpower.org/episode.
