“For it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose. Do everything without grumbling or arguing,”
– Philippians 2:13,14
I want you to seriously consider adopting this one concept. For two years now, I’ve lived by one of my all-time favorite quotes — from Benjamin Disraeli, the 19th-century British Prime Minister: never complain, never explain. There’s something deeply powerful about those four words. They carry a quiet self-respect and an unshakable dignity that most people spend their whole lives searching for. Think about how often we over-explain things to people who never asked for an explanation in the first place. You walk into a restaurant. The server comes over and asks what you’d like to drink. Simple question. But instead of just answering, you launch into it — “I usually get a soda, but I’m actually cutting back this month, so I think I’ll just do water today.” The server doesn’t care. They’re not judging you. They just need your order. A simple “I’ll have a water, thank you” is all it takes. My friend, start paying attention to how often you over-explain — and notice the reaction you get. Most of the time, people just nod and move on. They didn’t need the backstory. Now, if someone close to you — a parent, a spouse, a friend — genuinely asks why, by all means, open up. That’s what those relationships are for. But when no one’s asking? Skip the explanation. Give people the information, not the justification. Try it for one week and see how different it feels. And as you do, ask the Holy Spirit to guide you — to give you the wisdom to know when to speak and the strength to stay silent. With His help, never complain, never explain becomes more than a quote. It becomes a way of living with grace. |
Prayer
Holy Spirit, teach me to hold my tongue when words aren’t needed.
Reflection
How can you allow every word you speak — and every word you choose not to speak — to reflect God’s wisdom, character, and grace?
