Not that other stuff…

“Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give.”
-Matthew 10:8

You’re may be shocked by this: God is sovereign. God gets to do what God wants to do. He can use anyone he wants. He can use a Muslim, a Mormon, an atheist, and even a donkey. He can use anyone he wants, he gets to do whatever he wants to do, and we don’t get to say anything about it.

So, the Good Samaritan story teaches us that what makes us Christian is not all that other stuff. Those things matter. They do. Studying them is important teaching, truth is important, but the thing that matters the most is that we have compassion. “Do unto others what you’d have them do unto you, for this sums up the law and the prophets.” Those are the words of Jesus.

Jesus says, “And on that day, not all who say to me, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.” Did you hear that? “For on that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, did we not cast out demons in your name, and in your name prophecy and perform many miracles?’ And I will tell them plainly, ‘Depart from me. I never knew you.’” Why? “Because you never did the will of my Father in heaven.”

Prayer: Dear Lord, you are sovereign over all. Help me to see others through your eyes and share your love with those I may have found unlovable. Amen.

Reflection: Have you ever loved someone through Christ’s love when your love wasn’t enough?
