What I want to share today can lead to new opportunities, relationships, and victories in your life. But this gift comes at a cost—your focused attention. Success requires us to be present and intentional. As a pastor, I rarely get to simply sit and listen in church anymore. Many pastors are drawn to ministry out of a love for the church, but in answering that call, we often lose the chance to just receive. Recently, I was refreshed by attending a neighboring church where the pastor gave a memorable sermon.

Hearing this powerful sermon, I found myself taking pages of notes—writing down insights, questions, and new perspectives. It’s not always easy to keep up, especially with sermons that challenge you to think deeply, but the reward is worth it. What struck me that day was how others seemed to be disengaged; people were checking their smartphones or looking around, while I was filling my notebook with ideas I’d never considered before. I couldn’t help but wonder how many were missing out on real treasures simply by not paying close attention.

My friend, that’s why I encourage you to pay attention, and be intentional about your focus—bring a notebook to church, jot down what speaks to you, or use your phone to take notes (I promise, I won’t mind!). You’ll not only remember more, but you’ll also have something meaningful to revisit and share with others. This principle applies not only to receiving God’s Word but also to every area where you’re called to grow. Distractions are everywhere, but with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we can stay focused, gain understanding, and grow in wisdom.
