“I assure you that there were many widows in Israel in Elijah’s time, when the sky was shut for three and a half years and there was a severe famine throughout the land. Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them, but to a widow in Zarephath in the region of Sidon.  And there were many in Israel with leprosy in the time of Elisha the prophet, yet not one of them was cleansed—only Naaman the Syrian.”

– Luke 4:25-27

When Jesus confronted the unbelief of His hometown friends and neighbors, He cited several instances in which God showed grace to those least likely to expect it, let alone those who deserve it. Though His fellow Nazarenes were certain they would receive good things from Him simply because they “knew Him when,” He pointed out that there are no favorites in His Kingdom. He drew their attention to two people whose proactive faith resulted in a miraculous manifestation, yet neither was Jewish.

Elijah was sent to save a Gentile widow and her son from starvation. Why? Because she had great reverence for God and was willing to give up her last bit of food for the prophet’s sake. Likewise, Naaman, a leper and Syrian warrior who had a history of being brutal to the Israelites, went out of his way to seek healing from the God of Jacob, and he received a miracle for setting his pride aside. Our Savior will display His glory for those who most diligently desire to see Him revealed.

My friend, in your walk as a Christian, it’s easy to believe that wonders will find you simply because you know the God who is their source. But as you proactively press into His power, you will be blessed as He responds. By His Spirit working through you along with bold faith, miracles are born and Jesus is glorified!

Prayer

Jesus, fill my heart with expectant faith and help me to press into the fullness of Your power, every day.
