Pressed Down But Not Defeated

“Now Joseph and all his brothers and all that generation died, but the Israelites were exceedingly fruitful; they multiplied greatly, increased in numbers and became so numerous that the land was filled with them. Then a new king, to whom Joseph meant nothing, came to power in Egypt.”

– Exodus 1:6-8

Moses was born into a world that was dominated by the Egyptians. It all goes back to Joseph, who was sold into slavery by his brothers because they were jealous of his favor with their father. A long journey led him to a prison in Egypt where he gained the attention of Pharaoh, and after interpreting his dream, he was elevated to a place of power and influence in the land.

Since Joseph’s family grew up in the Egyptian world, there was a large Hebrew population in that nation. However, as generations went by, Joseph and the Pharaoh who knew him, died, so there was a new Pharaoh and new Israelite leaders as well. When Pharaoh saw the Hebrew nation growing, he became fearful that they would overthrow the Egyptians. As his paranoia continued to take hold, he passed unjust laws that pressed down the Jewish people. Interestingly, the more he did that, the more they continued to thrive and grow! This is why they ended up slaves.

Friend, nothing can stop the power and favor of God in your life! Like the Israelites, you may be pressed down on all sides, but the Lord will continue His work on your behalf. Even if you are oppressed by the forces of darkness, He has not forgotten you. There may be a season of suffering, but your loving Savior will come to lead you out of bondage and into the Promised Land. Stand strong, trust Him, and never lose hope in His character, because He who promised is faithful!

Prayer

Jesus, I pray for strength to hold on in the hard times, until you come and lead me to the Promised Land.

Reflection

How has God shown Himself faithful in a suffering season of your life?
